Workplace Violence De-Escalation Training: The Benefits

Envision a workplace where employees and leaders can handle various types of stresses, crisis, and harassment while maintaining composure, problem solving diligence, and professionalism.

Utilizing De-Escalation skills are more than just about managing crisis in the moment. It is about finding a tailored solution for the individual experiencing a challenge while enhancing human relation skills. If done correctly, an escalated interaction can lead to a positive outcome for both parties and paint an encouraging perspective on human interactions, fostering the continued benefits of collaboration and cohesion.

In truth, no human being enjoys being harassed, bullied, intimidated, or threatened. When we are faced with this, our emotional center- the limbic system of the brain perceives threat and can react instinctively with a fight, flight, freeze or fawn response. Whether it is a colleague, client, friend or family member, there is a way to engage in conflict resolution with tact. We all know that responding in ways that may make the matter worse is not the answer. Furthermore, inability to effectively de-escalate violence in the workplace comes with significant risks. It impacts workplace culture, team dynamics, workplace safety and can further carry ethical and legal risks. On an individual level, it destroys workplace relationships, greatly reduces profit margins, and can leave employees feeling angry, frustrated, and unfairly treated.

The good news is we can develop skills to override the limbic system’s instinctive response through the appropriate perception shifts and repetition of tactful de-escalation strategies. We won’t win every interaction. The point of it is to put in the work and deposit into the bank of self-discipline for every challenging experience. There are always two options we have when faced with workplace violence: succumb to the circumstances or overcome them through effectively leveraging workplace violence- de-escalation skills.

Training is valuable in reinforcing and introducing new and effective skills to successfully de-escalate incidents of workplace violence. Corporate training that equips staff with de-escalation skills can provide many benefits.

Let’s uncover the value of workplace de-escalation training:

#1 Improved Professionalism:

Staff trained with de-escalation strategies will be equipped to mitigate the negative effects of harassment, bullying, intimidation, and threats in the workplace.

#2 Improved Reputation:

Brand and reputation are improved to the public eye when staff demonstrate de-escalation skills. Escalated clients leave the interaction feeling heard, respected, and validated.

#3 Healthy Work Culture:

Instead of quick judgment, empathy will become common in the workplace leading to improved relationships between colleagues during times of stress, challenge, and conflict.

#4 Increased Staff Confidence:

Reactionary responses are greatly reduced. Logical thinking is optimized to determine root cause of a conflict with the perception of working alongside, instead of against.
